Georgians invited to ‘Discover Your Roots’ at free genealogy conference

SHARPSBURG — This March, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Metro Atlanta congregations and the Afro-American Historical & Genealogy Society (AAHGS) invite you to ‘Discover Your Roots’ at a free genealogy seminar on March 11, 2023 in Sharpsburg, GA. Registration is now open.

“Maybe you’ve taken a DNA test for genealogy and you’re thinking, ‘Now what?’ Come to Discover Your Roots. We’ll show you what to do next,” Marilee Gardner, one of the co-founders, said.

The conference will feature free 50-minute courses taught by genealogy experts from across Georgia on topics such as DNA and genetic genealogy, slave ship manifests, recording family stories and more. Participants can sign up for one-on-one help with their own family tree when they register.

Discover Your Roots was founded in 2018 by Gardner and fellow genealogy enthusiast Jan Bryant, who met in Peachtree City. Gardner, who is adopted, found her birth family using an AncestryDNA kit. Bryant traced her ancestry to the 1600s and discovered ancestors who came to America from central Africa prior to the Revolutionary War.
